Futuristic Contact Lenses – Did the movies get it right?
Tuesday, January 10, 2012 at 3:08PM For years we have been watching films that play with the idea of technological breakthroughs. Tom Cruise has been greeted by a virtual sales assistant in the smash hit Minority Report and Gerard Butler has been transported into a shooting game by a fanatic video gamer. In spy films, especially Mission Impossible Ethan Hunt uses contact lenses to get into top secret rooms and Arnold Schwarzenegger brings up his victim’s details on a screen right before his eyes.
And it seems now technology has caught up with these ideas and produced a lens that is truly futuristic.
This new lens projects images to wearers allowing them to read floating texts and emails or augment their sight. The bionic contact has just passed the first set of tests and if successful is going to change the way we see life and conduct everyday activities forever. Researchers and the team behind the bionic contact lens, believing that hundreds more pixels could be embedded in the lens, which could be used in a multitude of everyday uses such as:
• Drivers can wear these lenses to see journey directions or their vehicle's speed, which could be projected onto the windscreen
• They could be used to take the virtual world of video gaming to a new dimension, just like Gerard Butler’s Gamer film
• Provide doctors/nurses/dentists with up-to-date medical information like blood sugar levels by linking to biosensors in the wearer's body
Professor Babak Praviz’s team have already overcome one of the most difficult hurdles; getting the human eye to focus on an image generated on its surface, by adapting the lens to shorten the focal distance.
According to research the human eye can normally only see objects clearly if they are held several centimetres away from the eye. However, before they come onto the market there are more hurdles to overcome. A good power source needs to be found and their microcircuitry needs to be more advance as it can only currently source enough power to light one light emitting-diode.
We’re a little bit excited about these new lenses, it’s a bit Terminator meets Minority Report. They’re certainly going to be the hottest new technology for gamers and are sure to come in useful when wanting to drive safely.
